Happy young lady sitting in front of laptop, looking happy and being productive

Nip procrastination in the bud and focus on ways to maximise your productivity! World Productivity Day celebrated every June 20th is dedicated to improving how we work and live. It’s not about working harder but smarter, encouraging us all to become more efficient and find new and modern ways to achieve more in less time.

The Significance of World Productivity Day

World Productivity Day hopes to inspire individuals and organisations to boost productivity by adopting smarter work strategies. It reminds us to rethink or evaluate how we manage tasks and look at new ways to improve performance and well-being by using the latest tools and technologies.

The day promotes innovation and the sharing of success stories that hopefully can motivate others. A habit or success story I’m happy to share is not constantly checking my emails and messages every time there is a ping or notification. Responding immediately to every message and or ping will suck up your time better than a Dyson!

Instead, I opt to have set times to check messages with periods of what I call deep work in between using an analogue timer. This is my adaptation of the Pomodoro Technique, a time management method developed by Francesco Cirillo in the 19080’s. The Pomodoro Technique method is based on 25-minute stretches of focused work broken up with 5-minute breaks. A longer break of 15 – 30 minutes is typically taken after four consecutive work intervals. Each interval is called a Pomodoro, which is Italian for tomato, why? Simply because Francesco's timer was shaped like a tomato!

By reflecting on our work habits and striving for continuous improvement, we can achieve a more happy and balanced life.

A Historical Perspective

World Productivity Day has an interesting history, highlighting key milestones that have shaped productivity. Such as the invention of mechanical clocks in the 1300s, marked the beginning of structured time management. In 1913, Henry Ford implemented the first assembly line, revolutionising mass production and significantly enhancing efficiency.

Throughout history, figures like Ernest Hemingway revealed that when he was working on a book or story he would write only in the morning as soon as after first light resulting in increased productivity. It is reported that Hemingway would get up between 5.30 and 6 am, without fail and irrespective of how much he had drunk the night before!

Abraham Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs in 1943 provided insights into human motivation and its link to productivity. In the context of productivity, Maslow’s theory recognises that an individual can be productive and motivated to achieve more when they feel healthy, safe, secure and in a positive environment.

These milestones remind us that productivity encompasses more than just work, it involves creating impactful habits for success and fulfilment. Today we can choose from a plethora of apps, platforms, time management tools and of course the avalanche of AI tools.
